Commoditization Without Exploitation

One of the greatest criticisms of the Caribbean tourism industry is the commoditization of the region’s human, cultural, and natural assets to the point of exploitation. Too pervasive is the sentiment that in the Caribbean, the interests of the tourists supersede those of the citizens, evidenced by the centering of destinations’ activities and resources on satisfying tourism objectives. This session will examine the critical factors which catalyze the misuse and overuse of the Caribbean’s intrinsic resources for tourist consumption, as well as explore feasible opportunities to maximize the Caribbean’s marine, cultural and heritage treasures to enhance the tourism product without exploiting the region’s inherent wealth.
